Free Family Emergency Records Kit
If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know where the will is, who to call first, or which bills stop if nobody pays them? This Google Sheet puts it in one place: where every important paper is kept, who to call, who steps in for your kids and pets, which bills are paid by hand, and how to get into your phone and email. It records where things are, never the numbers on them. Free. No email required.

What's inside
Start Here: what your family does first, the three people to call, how complete your kit is, and a reminder when it is time to review
Where Things Are: 40 common papers already listed, from birth certificates and the DD-214 to the will and life insurance. Fill in where each original is kept
People, and Dependents and Pets: who to call in order, and who steps in for your kids, a parent you care for, or your pets
Bills and Accounts: which bills keep running on autopay and which stop unless someone pays them
Digital Life: where the way into your phone, email, and password manager is kept, and what you want done with each account
If Something Happens: a one-page sheet that fills itself in. Print it for the fridge or the fire safe
How to start
Make your copy and type your name on Start Here.
Fill in Where Things Are. One evening gets most of it done.
On People, put 1, 2, and 3 next to the three people to call first.
Print the If Something Happens page, and tell one or two trusted people where your kit is.
Keep it safe
Write where things are kept, never the numbers on them. The sheet turns a cell red if it looks like a full Social Security, account, or card number. Keep your copy in your own Google account, turn on 2-step sign-in, and share it only by email with people you trust. Avoid "Anyone with the link."
This is not a will
This kit is a record of where things are and who to call. It is not a will, power of attorney, or legal document, and it is not legal or financial advice. Talk with a lawyer for wills, trusts, and guardianship. For longer money and document forms, see FEMA's free Emergency Financial First Aid Kit.
