Free Alabama Family Benefits Checklist

Help with food, health care, energy bills, rent, child care, and money comes from many different Alabama offices. This free checklist shows where to start, what to ask for by name, and who to call, with local offices and phone numbers for all 67 counties. Every item points to the official source. Fill it in on your phone or computer, or print it. No email required.

What's inside

  • Three ways in: MyDHR for food help, one online form for Medicaid and ALL Kids, and 211

  • What is changing: DHR's move to the new ACES website and the child care wait list

  • If medical bills are piling up: the offices to call first and the questions to ask

  • Behind on bills: when heating and cooling help open, which utilities follow the cold-weather shut-off rule, the renter's 7-day notice, and tax lien deadlines

  • Food, health, housing, internet, ALL Kids, child care help, First Class Pre-K, and Family Assistance cash help

  • An Alabama veterans page: free claim help from Veterans Service Officers, the property tax exemption, five state veterans homes, and VA care

  • Your county: DHR office phone, energy help, and nearest VA hospital for all 67 counties

  • Statewide legal aid, college aid, and a printable tracker page

Who it's for

Alabama families with kids who are working, between jobs, underinsured, or one bill away from a crisis. Schools, libraries, food pantries, clinics, and family resource centers are welcome to print and share it. Outside Alabama? Use the national Family Benefits Checklist or the West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, DC, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Kentucky, or Arkansas edition.

Help keep this accurate

Programs, rules, and phone numbers change. If something no longer matches what an office told you, send me a note with the page and what changed. Never include a Social Security number, case number, or bank details.

Alabama edition 1.0. Checked October 2026 against official Alabama and federal program pages.

The fine print

This is an unofficial plain-language guide, not legal, tax, or financial advice. It does not decide who qualifies; the office that runs each program decides, and its letters are the record. Mission-Ready Tools is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the State of Alabama, any government agency, 211, or the nonprofits named.
