Programs & Event Sites
Background:
In 2022, I volunteered for the planning team for the 113th Wing Chief Induction Ceremony. One of my responsibilities was designing the program for the event. This file was 10 pages of biographies. After designing the program, it was time to print them for the event. But…we ran out of paper. Then…after refilling the paper, the toner was low, so had to find another printer. After finally printing 75 programs, I used 525 pages of paper. Then it was time to fold them all. But then…a change was requested. That would mean, duplicating the work and killing more resources.
There has to be a better way to do this. How can we save money, save time, and make it so we can make changes down to the wire?
The Idea:
While at a restaurant with my wife Amy, I saw they used a QR code for a menu. This sparked the idea to solve this problem.
Approach:
Here was the approach I took to help solve this problem.
Created a 5 X 7” QR code design and limited it to 1-page front and back, which would be the only file printed. Canva was the perfect platform for this.
Designed a web page for the event, which we could edit from a mobile device up to, during, or even after an event. Canva makes it simple to do from even your mobile device.
Tested the concept on my own military retirement this past March. I sought feedback and ideas from my family and friends to get it just right.
Results:
I have since designed for individuals from the 113th Wing, Michigan Air National Guard, and the National Guard Bureau. I worked directly with the honoree through the entire design process, tailoring both the QR and web design to the individual.
